A roundup of must have tips to transition from an office job to a "work from home" environment.
The world is in flux right now and millions of people who usually wake up and head to an office each day our now transitioning to an "at-home" work environment.
Working from home can seem fun/relaxing/chill to onlookers, but the truth is it can actually present a number of unique challenges that most people are not prepared for. Believe it or not, working from home actually takes MORE time management skills and focus than being in an office environment.
Having working from home for over a decade, I have come up with a few key tips that work for my daily routine and that I think could help all of you as well!
1. Get Dressed
Just because you’re home, doesn’t mean you can’t keep a regular routine. Just like you normally would, you can still wake up, shower, get dressed in a comfortable outfit as if you were going out for the day. Just try not to lounge in your pajamas. This will be a reminder that you are actually working and feel like you’re at the office.
2. Identify What Needs to be Done Every Day
Prioritize what’s most important and space out your day. Break it up so that you’re doing a blend of different tasks and not just staring at a screen constantly. Read, write, research, etc. This technique is very effective as it can create some flexibility in your schedule. Right now many of us are lacking freedom, so why not explore something new. I am a very visual person so I find making a written to-do list helps me prioritize more efficiently.
3. Noise Cancelling Headphones
Plug in, zone in, and increase your productivity. Whether it’s the dishwasher, the doorbell, family members having conversations...these sounds can be distracting. If your job requires you to be on the phone frequently, you don’t want to see unprofessional with continuous background noise.
